Research commissioned by the Information Commissioner’s Office indicates that only a fifth of UK citizens trust organisations and businesses with their personal data. In fact, there is less trust in businesses than public bodies in this regard. The research also indicates that only 10% of UK citizens have a good understanding of how their data is being used.
Other highlights of the report:
- 61% trust the NHS with their data
- 53% trust the police with their data
- Only 12% have trust and confidence in social media platform’s use of their personal data
In a blog post about the results, the Deputy Information Commissioner highlighted the GDPR as an opportunity for businesses to re-assure their customers about the use of their data.
Accountability underpins everything the GDPR is about, both in terms of making it the Data Controllers and Data Processors responsibility to demonstrate their compliance and in terms of expectations about record keeping, particularly when consent is the lawful basis for processing and in some situations details of processing activities.
